Bunnings Responds to Grower Concerns with New Agreement

In a significant move following concerns raised during a recent supermarket senate inquiry, Bunnings has reached an agreement with Greenlife Industry Australia (GIA) to improve its dealings with plant suppliers. The inquiry had brought to light deep-seated issues, with suppliers accusing Bunnings of unfair treatment and a severe power imbalance. Some growers reported operating at a loss, and many expressed fears of speaking out due to potential retaliation.

GIA CEO Joanna Cave welcomed the agreement as a positive step forward, calling it a “watershed moment” for the industry. “It delivers commercial certainty to growers in a way they haven’t experienced before,” Cave said, noting that the deal includes provisions for independent arbitration, offering growers a safer way to resolve disputes.

However, not all are convinced. Veteran nursery owner John Van Der Lay, based on the Mid North Coast of NSW, remains skeptical. “A leopard doesn’t change its spots,” he said, reflecting on past experiences with the retail giant. Still, Cave emphasized that while the agreement is voluntary and based on good faith, it lays the foundation for a more collaborative future between Bunnings and its suppliers.

Michael Schneider, Bunnings Group Managing Director, echoed this sentiment, stating that the company is committed to greater transparency and accountability. “We see this as an important first step to build trust and improve the industry for everyone involved,” he said. The agreement will be reviewed annually, with the first formal review scheduled for February 26, 2026.

Bunnings encourages customers to plan ahead, shop on April 24, or wait until the afternoon of Anzac Day. The retailer also urges Australians to observe the spirit of the day by attending a local dawn service before visiting stores.

Whether it’s reforming supplier relationships or observing national traditions, Bunnings is showing a willingness to adapt and evolve. From helping growers feel heard to accommodating a national day of respect, the company is shaping a narrative that blends business responsibility with cultural awareness—strengthening its position not just as a retail powerhouse, but as a brand that listens.
