When to plant strawberry seeds?

Summer is associated with luscious red berries covered in cream; but, only if you keep in mind when to sow strawberry seeds and start working properly.

Indeed, whether you want to grow strawberries in pots or in the ground, you should consider how long they take to flourish if you wish an abundance ready for consumption come Wimbledon.

For a reason, it's among the most quotable sentences from The Lord of the Rings; after all, there is no taste quite so memorable as the sweet and slightly tangy flesh of a ripe strawberry. How therefore can we make sure we can disappear into all that wonderful reminiscence come summertime?

'Honestly, the ideal time to plant strawberry seeds will always depend on whether you're starting them indoors or sowing directly outside,' says Christopher O'Donoghue, one of the co-directors at Gardens Revived.

'In my opinion, you're better off growing them indoors,' says Christopher, pointing out that he would advise you to sow seeds between January and March in trays or pots to give them an early start.

Once the ground has warmed, put strawberry seeds outside between April and May.

'Just be ready for the fact that weather circumstances can slow down and undermine dependability of germination,' advises Christopher.

Most people prefer to grow runners or potted plants as strawberry seeds take up to a month to develop and you typically get no fruit until the following year.
