Ready your hummingbird feeders: Hummingbirds are back in NH

For 2025 the hummingbirds are returning to New Hampshire and Maine.

Tiny ruby-throated hummingbirds have been seen in New Hampshire as well as as far north as Portland, Maine as of April 22.

The first were seen in New Hampshire on April 18; spotters noted the hummingbirds were searching for petunia to eat on and hummingbird feeders.

It makes sense they would be hungry. From the United States in the summer to Mexico, Costa Rica, and Panama in the winter, the small birds—weigh less than a nickel—make a massive annual migration.

The only hummingbird found in the Granite State, their numbers are rising. The New Hampshire Audubon estimates that the state boasts roughly 50% more than in the 1970s.

Usually arriving in New Hampshire in late April or very early May, the males arrive first.

Hummingbird Central reports that on April 20, 2024, the first hummingbirds were observed in New Hampshire.
