Ted Lasso, a hit comedy-drama series from Apple TV+, is back for a surprise fourth season; it is confirmed with one significant narrative twist.
Lead by Jason Sudeikis, the Emmy-winning sitcom finished its three-year run in 2023.
But Sudeikis, who plays the title warm-hearted comedy’s idealistic, slightly naive AFC Richmond coach Ted, has disclosed that they are currently retelling the tale for much awaited new season.
“We’re writing season four now,” Sudeikis, 49, revealed on a recent Travis and Jason Kelce New Heights podcast episode. The official language is “that”.
Additionally confirming his reprising of his part is the Hall Pass comedian, who also serves as an executive producer on the show.
While Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) filled in as assistant coach with coach Beard (Brendan Hunt), Ted returned home to America to handle personal matters in the season three finale.
“Ted’s coaching a women’s team,” he said, shocking the Kelce brothers.
Kansas City Chiefs star Travis asked whether Ted will formally be back home in America in the next season. Sudeikis answered gently, “Yeah, that’s too many questions.”
In a press release, Sudeikis said: “As we all continue to live in a world where so many circumstances have conditioned us to “look before we leap, in season four the folks at AFC Richmond learn to leap before they look, understanding that wherever they land, it’s precisely where they’re supposed to be.”
Among Ted Lasso’s other stars are Wild Child actress Juno Temple, comedian Nick Mohammed, Game of Thrones star Hannah Waddingham, and actor Phil Dunster from The Devil’s Hour. Which of the original ensemble will be returning with Sudeikis is unknown yet.
Head of programming for Apple TV+ Matt Cherniss said: “Ted Lasso has been nothing short of a juggernaut, motivating a dedicated fanbase all around the world, and giving infinite joy and laughter, all while spreading kindness, compassion and unshakeable belief.
“Everyone at Apple is delighted to be working with Jason and the amazing creative brains behind this show going forward.”
Ted Lasso made his debut in 2020 under much positive and critical praise. It focused on Ted, an American football coach recruited to oversee a British football squad, despite knowing nothing about the later game at all.
Ted Lasso won 13, with Sudeikis choosing the main actor in a comedy series gong in 2021 and 2022. Ted Lasso garnered 61 Emmy nominations overall over its first season.
Based on pre-existing NBC Sports structure and characters, the sitcom was conceived by Sudeikis, Bill Lawrence, Joe Kelly and Brendan Hunt. Additionally acting as an executive producer and writer was Goldstein.
Season four’s release date is still pending announcement.
