Heatwave and Rain Alert: IMD Predicts Rain for Kongu Region and Several Parts of Tamil Nadu – Full 7-Day Weather Forecast Inside


Chennai, 14 May 2025 – After days of intense summer heat, a wave of relief is likely heading toward Tamil Nadu. According to the latest update from the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennairainfall is expected today in the Kongu districts, thanks to favorable developments in the Andaman region, where the southwest monsoon has officially begun.

Recent Weather Overview in Tamil Nadu

In the past 24 hours, isolated rainfall was recorded in parts of Tamil Nadu, while Puducherry and Karaikal remained dry. Madurai Airport saw the highest maximum temperature in the state, touching 41.0°C, whereas the lowest temperature in the plains was recorded in Karur Paramathi at 23.5°C.

While some districts experienced a 1-3°C drop in maximum temperatures, the change was minimal in most regions. In several areas, maximum temperatures were 2-3°C above normal, especially in interior Tamil Nadu.

IMD Rain Forecast for Tamil Nadu – 14 to 20 May 2025

A low-pressure circulation over the southwest Bay of Bengal and its surrounding Tamil Nadu coastal areas is influencing the weather pattern.

Today, 14 May (Wednesday):

  • Light to moderate rain with thunder, lightning, and gusty winds (40–50 km/h) likely in several places across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.
  • Heavy rain possible in hilly areas of Coimbatore and Tiruppur, and isolated spots in Nilgiris, Erode, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Theni, and Dindigul.

15 May (Thursday):

  • Continued thunderstorm activity with similar rainfall in parts of Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Tirupattur, and Vellore.

16 May (Friday):

  • Rain accompanied by thunder and lightning forecasted in Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukottai, Cuddalore, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Tiruchirappalli, and Karaikal.

17 & 18 May (Saturday–Sunday):

  • Light to moderate rainfall expected across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal with isolated thunderstorms.

19 & 20 May (Monday–Tuesday):

  • Scattered light to moderate rain likely to continue in parts of the state.

Temperature Trends and Heatwave Warning

  • Maximum temperatures across most of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal will remain steady through 18 May.
  • However, isolated places may experience a gradual drop of 2–3°C in maximum temperatures.
  • In contrast, some regions may see temperatures 2–3°C above normal, along with higher humidity and nighttime minimums 2–4°C above normal, potentially causing discomfort.

  • 14 May: Partly cloudy skies with chances of light rain in some areas.
    • Max Temp: 37–38°C
    • Min Temp: 28–29°C
  • 15 May: Similar weather expected with light showers in parts of the city.
    • Max Temp: 36–37°C
    • Min Temp: 28–29°C

Fishermen Warning – Rough Sea Alert

  • Until 18 Maystrong winds (45–55 km/h) are likely over the Gulf of MannarKanyakumari coast, and adjoining Kumari Sea.
  • From 14 to 16 May, parts of the Southwest Bay of BengalAndaman Sea, and Southeast Bay will also face gusty winds up to 55 km/h.
  • Lakshadweep and Southeast Arabian Sea may experience similar conditions today.

👉 Fishermen are advised not to venture into these rough sea regions during the warning period.
