Eggs Recalled Salmonella — A multistate salmonella outbreak has prompted the recall of 1.7 million eggs distributed by California-based August Egg Company, according to federal health officials.
The eggs, sold under various brand names, were recalled after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) linked them to at least 79 illnesses and 21 hospitalizations across seven states.
The recalled products include brown cage-free and brown certified organic eggs distributed between February 3 and May 15 to major retailers such as Walmart, Safeway, FoodMaxx, and Smart & Final.
Affected states include California, Nevada, Arizona, Washington, New Mexico, Nebraska, Illinois, Indiana, and Wyoming. The eggs have sell-by dates ranging from March 4 to June 19.
Consumers are urged to check their egg cartons and immediately discard or return any affected products. “This outbreak may not be limited to states with confirmed illnesses, and the real number of cases is likely higher,” the CDC noted, citing underreporting and untested infections.
Salmonella infections can cause severe illness in young children, seniors, and those with weakened immune systems. Common symptoms include diarrhea, fever, vomiting, and stomach cramps that typically begin 6 hours to 6 days after exposure.
August Egg Company said it halted fresh egg sales and began diverting products to a pasteurization facility to eliminate potential pathogens. The company’s internal food safety team is conducting a thorough review to prevent future outbreaks.
In addition to the egg recall, the FDA is also investigating a separate salmonella outbreak linked to cucumbers, which has sickened 45 people in 18 states.
