DiJonai Carrington and Angel Reese claim WNBA players are ready to strike during CBA talks

The WNBA has experienced unprecedented growth in recent years, setting the stage for critical collective bargaining agreement (CBA) negotiations that could define the league’s future. Star players Angel Reese (Chicago Sky) and DiJonai Carrington (Dallas Wings) recently hinted on Reese’s “Unapologetically Angel” podcast that athletes are prepared to strike if their demands for improved compensation and benefits are not met.

Reese emphasized that 2026 rookies stand to gain significantly from potential salary increases, while Carrington confirmed that players have discussed walkouts during WNBPA meetings:

“I’ve heard talks like, ‘If y’all don’t meet our demands, we’re sitting out.’”
“It’s a real possibility,” Carrington added.

The current CBA, set to expire in 2027, was opted out of by players in 2023. While the 2025 season will proceed under existing terms, negotiations must conclude by 2026 to avoid disruptions.

These talks come amid surging interest in the league, fueled in part by rookie sensation Caitlin Clark. However, even before her arrival, viewership had been climbing steadily. The 2024 WNBA Finals finale—which did not feature Clark—saw a 142% ratings spike compared to 2023, underscoring the league’s expanding appeal.

Despite this momentum, WNBA salaries remain low, forcing many players—including top stars—to rely on sponsorships or overseas leagues to supplement income. Reese, who once joked her Sky paycheck “doesn’t cover one bill,” just wrapped a breakout rookie season, while Carrington, the 2024 Most Improved Player, recently joined the Wings after four seasons with the Connecticut Sun.

As revenue climbs, players are adamant about securing a fair share of the league’s financial success, making these negotiations a pivotal moment for the WNBA’s evolution.
