5 movies we're excited to see in 2025

This is the year to be a fan of A-list directors.
A number of famous filmmakers will make a triumphant return to theaters in the year 2025. In no particular order, these are five upcoming features:

5. The Running Man
Release date: Nov. 7

The potential for success or failure is higher for no film on this list. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s science fiction throwback The Running Man from 1987 is a relic of his career that famously foretold reality television. Considering the disastrous 2012 remake of Total Recall, it appears that a remake is not warranted. On the other hand, the fact that Edgar Wright is directing and Glen Powell is starring is sure to attract attention. After Twisters, Hit Man, and Anyone But You, Powell is riding a hot streak, and Wright never makes dull movies. It will be interesting to watch where Stephen King takes this work in his remake. The theory goes that this adaptation stays truer to the original.

4. Mickey 17
Release date: March 7

Parasite, Bong Joon-ho’s Oscar-winning best picture, is almost here, and fans can hardly wait. Since that parody was released prior to the epidemic, anticipation for the South Korean director’s subsequent work has been building for quite some time. This is Joon-ho’s second foray into science fiction; he also directed Snowpiercer. With an outstanding ensemble including Robert Pattinson, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, Steven Yeun, and Mark Ruffalo, this is an absolute must-watch. If the teaser is any indication, Mickey 17 will have clones, much like Duncan Jones’s Moon (2009). But there are a lot Robert Pattinsons instead of Sam Rockwells. Optimal science fiction films address or pose questions about matters that are relevant to the actual world. What Mickey 17 shows us will be absolutely amazing.

3. Sinners
Release date: April 18

Taking a vacation from their tentpole franchises, Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan are collaborating on a new project. Since they initially joined forces in Fruitvale Station (2013), they have produced a number of fruitful collaborations. Written and directed by Ryan Coogler, Sinners is a vampire horror film. This time around, Jordan plays a double part as identical twins who run into problems upon their return to their Southern homeland during the Jim Crow era. This idea seems like it may lead to some interesting explorations of racial concerns. Good stories about the dead always manage to draw large crowds, as Nosferatu proved.

2. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning
Release date: May 23

Since the first film came out in 1996, Tom Cruise, who is 62 years old, has been the star of these films. He will, however, remain the series narrator for Mission: Impossible for as long as his health and Paramount Pictures permit. Following on from Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One comes Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. The Entity, an artificial intelligence, was Ethan Hunt’s adversary when we last left him. Among the spectacular set pieces and stuntwork in the 2023 film was a breathtaking train scene. Because of the Barbenheimer effect, Dead Reckoning did not do very well at the box office. The success of the Final Reckoning hinges on whether or not it revives the series.

1. Superman
Release date: July 11

In the role of Superman, David Corenswet follows in the footsteps of Henry Cavill and Brandon Routh. The previous tallest Superman, Christopher Reeve, was 6-foot-4 in the first film, therefore Corenswet is the first actor to reach that height. The parallels continue beyond that point. Corenswet went to the famous Juilliard School, much like Reeve did before him. On top of that, nobody knows much about Corenswet. Last year, he appeared in Twisters as a supporting character. The first big film directed by James Gunn for the DC Cinematic Universe, this one is supposed to breathe new life into the series. The casting of Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor has piqued fans’ interest in more Superman adventures. With over 250 million views in the first 24 hours, the premiere trailer set a new record.
